Hospital Overview
Institutional Profile
Founded in 1958, Xinhua Hospital affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine is one of Shanghai's earliest independently designed and constructed comprehensive public hospitals in the post-1949 era. Over more than six decades of continuous development, the hospital has evolved into a leading Class III Grade A tertiary academic medical center, integrating adult and pediatric medicine within a coordinated, lifecycle-based healthcare delivery model.
The hospital operates 63 clinical and medical technology departments, with 2,700 licensed beds and a workforce of approximately 5,100 professionals. Its service framework provides comprehensive care spanning prenatal medicine through geriatric health (0-100+ years), emphasizing preventive care, screening, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and long-term management.
Dual-Campus Integrated System
Xinhua Hospital currently operates a dual-campus system:
- Yangpu Campus: The long-established main campus featuring dedicated and functionally separated adult and pediatric clinical zones.
- Fengxian Campus: Officially opened on June 28, 2025, representing a major municipal healthcare infrastructure initiative supporting Shanghai's Five New Cities development strategy.
Together, the two campuses form an integrated care network designed to improve regional accessibility while maintaining standardized clinical governance and coordinated care pathways. The Fengxian campus incorporates modern one-stop patient service design and advanced technologies, including TOMO radiotherapy systems and surgical robotics, supporting precision diagnosis and minimally invasive treatment.
Regional Care Impact
As the first tertiary comprehensive hospital in Fengxian District, the new campus has rapidly become a key provider of high-quality healthcare in southern Shanghai and the Yangtze River Delta region. Since opening, it has delivered nearly 500,000 outpatient and emergency visits and discharged approximately 14,000 inpatients, while achieving a 98.8% emergency resuscitation success rate and maintaining a high proportion (about 45%) of complex Level III-IV surgeries.

Key Specialized Departments Overview
Pediatric Cardiology
The Pediatric Cardiology Department specializes in the diagnosis and management of congenital and acquired heart diseases in children, including complex congenital heart defects and arrhythmias. Supported by advanced imaging, interventional, and surgical capabilities, the hospital is among the few centers in China able to perform neonatal cardiac surgery, including correction of transposition of the great arteries. A dedicated Heart and Great Vessels Center is planned for the upcoming Fengxian campus, further strengthening multidisciplinary cardiovascular care and clinical governance.
Pediatric Hematology-Oncology
This department provides comprehensive care for pediatric hematologic and oncologic conditions, including leukemia, anemia, and solid tumors. Services include standardized chemotherapy protocols, hematopoietic transplantation, and long-term follow-up management aligned with internationally recognized pediatric oncology practices. The hospital's strong academic foundation is supported by the Shanghai Institute for Pediatric Research, reinforcing translational research and evidence-based clinical care.
Pediatric Neurology
The Pediatric Neurology Department delivers specialized evaluation and treatment for neurological disorders such as epilepsy, cerebral palsy, and neurodevelopmental conditions. Care is supported by multidisciplinary teams, advanced diagnostic technologies, and structured treatment pathways designed to ensure continuity of care and measurable clinical outcomes.
Pediatric Surgery
The Pediatric Surgery Department provides comprehensive surgical management for congenital anomalies, pediatric tumors, and complex childhood conditions. The hospital established China's first integrated Fetal Hospital model, combining fetal medicine, neonatology, and pediatrics to deliver continuous care from prenatal diagnosis through early childhood (up to two years of age). Services include fetal screening, prenatal diagnosis, intrauterine intervention, postnatal surgery, and longitudinal follow-up. This integrated program operates at the Yangpu headquarters and is planned for expansion at the Fengxian campus. Pediatric Surgery is also designated to support international patient services.
Obstetrics and Gynecology
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology provides comprehensive maternal and women's health services, including high-risk pregnancy management, gynecologic oncology, and treatment of conditions such as endometriosis. Assisted reproductive services, including artificial insemination and in-vitro fertilization (IVF), are available. Delivery services follow standardized hospital protocols: labor and delivery occur in separate clinical rooms; private LDR suites are not available; VBAC is not supported; and only medical staff are permitted in delivery rooms during childbirth. The Fengxian campus will focus on critical and complex women's and pediatric cases, enhancing tertiary-level care capacity.
Dermatology
The Dermatology Department manages a wide spectrum of skin conditions, including eczema, psoriasis, and acne, using medical, procedural, and multidisciplinary treatment approaches. A dedicated Skin Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Center supports standardized evaluation and treatment planning.
Endocrinology
The Endocrinology Department provides diagnosis and management of endocrine disorders such as diabetes, thyroid disease, and metabolic conditions. Care is supported by modern diagnostic systems, individualized treatment planning, and ongoing disease management programs aligned with chronic-care best practices.
Clinical Nutrition
The Clinical Nutrition Department delivers evidence-based nutritional assessment and therapeutic intervention for patients with acute and chronic diseases. Services integrate with the hospital's Health Management Center to support preventive care, recovery optimization, and long-term health outcomes.
Emergency Medicine
The Emergency Department provides rapid assessment and treatment for acute and critical conditions through a high-capacity emergency care system. Emergency services are delivered through the general emergency department rather than a dedicated 24/7 English-language unit. The hospital operates one of Shanghai's highest-volume emergency centers, reflecting extensive operational experience in large-scale acute care delivery.
Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery
This department specializes in medical and surgical treatment of ear, nose, throat, and head-neck disorders, including sinus disease, otitis media, and head-neck tumors. Recognized as a national key clinical specialty, the department emphasizes minimally invasive and endoscopic techniques, particularly in pediatric airway and head-neck conditions. Its clinical and academic leadership contributes to ongoing research and innovation, including award-recognized work in advanced inner ear function assessment and clinical application.
Medical Checkup Center (Health Management Center)
The Medical Checkup Center provides comprehensive preventive health evaluations and executive health screening programs. Integrated health assessment, risk stratification, and follow-up recommendations support proactive health management aligned with international preventive medicine practices.
