1. Alipay & WeChat Pay (card-linked)

  • Download Alipay or WeChat Pay and link a Visa, Mastercard, or American Express international credit card
  • This is the most practical payment method for foreigners in China, covering registration, pharmacy, test payments, and most other hospital scenarios
  • Hospital self-service kiosks typically only accept scan-to-pay — no cash or foreign card swiping
  • Note: single-transaction and daily limits may apply (typically ~5,000–10,000 CNY), so arrange separately for large bills

2. Foreign cards & cash

  • Physical foreign card POS payments are reliable mainly at high-end hotels, private international hospitals, and upscale merchants — not at regular public hospital counters
  • If you hold an internationally issued UnionPay card, it is generally accepted at more POS terminals than Visa or Mastercard
  • Cash is legally accepted everywhere, but self-service kiosks do not accept it and some counters may have trouble making change or may prioritize digital payments
  • Carry a small amount of cash (500–1,000 CNY) as backup, but do not rely on cash as your primary method

3. Large payments & hospital deposits

  • Hospital deposits and surgery fees can reach tens or hundreds of thousands of CNY — your Alipay/WeChat card-linked account may have per-transaction limits
  • Ask the hospital whether bank transfer, over-the-counter card payment, or split payments are accepted for large amounts
  • Private hospitals usually require a deposit before admission; the amount varies significantly by hospital and treatment plan
  • Confirm large payment options with the hospital in advance to avoid being unable to pay on arrival

4. Insurance direct billing & reimbursement

  • Direct international insurance billing is supported only at some private hospitals and public international departments — confirm with both the hospital and your insurer in advance
  • If you plan to claim reimbursement, check whether the hospital provides bilingual invoices and itemized statements
  • Keep all payment receipts, diagnosis records, and treatment documents for post-treatment claims
  • Self-pay patients can also pay first and apply for reimbursement from their insurer afterward
